The Enduring Beauty of Transformation.
Date: 2024 / Post Production & Fine Art: recom Berlin / Special Thanks: Ava Pivot & Dana Bethkenhagen
Together with the team at recom Berlin, we pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium and explored countless possibilities.
Images were printed, torn apart, and reassembled. Additionally, photos were exposed on Polaroid film, which were then uniquely digitized.
We experimented with everything that seemed meaningful, and even with what did not.
The result was an extraordinary design study—multimedia in nature and deeply engaged with textual content.

Prologue
In this captivating photographic project, we delve into the intricate metalevels of a vehicle that is both heavily damaged and strikingly aesthetic. The subject of our study, a BMW vehicle ravaged by the hands of vandals, stands as a testament to the paradoxical beauty found within devastation.
Through the lens, we delve into the charred remnants and twisted metal, uncovering an unexpected elegance in the aftermath of the flames. The photographs do not merely capture a scene of vandalism; instead, they reveal the intricate textures, patterns, and forms that emerge from the burnt surfaces. Each image invites the viewer to see beyond the initial shock of destruction, to appreciate the nuanced interplay of light and shadow on the distorted materials.
The project seeks to challenge the conventional perceptions of beauty and destruction, urging the audience to recognize the inherent artistry in the remnants of what once was. The scorched exterior, though seemingly marred, becomes a canvas of transformation—its surface bearing witness to the forces of heat and time, sculpting new forms and narratives.
This exploration is not about glorifying the act of vandalism but rather about finding an enduring beauty in the aftermath. It is a meditation on the resilience of material and form, where destruction paradoxically gives rise to new visual and conceptual dialogues. The burnt vehicle, through the lens of this project, becomes a symbol of rebirth and the perpetual cycle of decay and renewal that defines our existence. The roses, left as a gesture of mourning, remind us of the enduring presence of human compassion even in the face of ruin, enriching the narrative with a profound sense of humanity.
We delve into the intricate interplay between heat and form, focusing on the image of a headlight. By creating a heat map, we emulated a thermal distribution across the headlight, revealing a detailed narrative of the fire’s aftermath.
As the days have passed since the fire, the heat map reveals that the residual heat from the flames has significantly diminished. The once vibrant hotspots of retained warmth have faded, giving way to a more uniform distribution influenced heavily by the daily cycle of sunlight. This shift marks the transition from the immediate aftermath of the fire to the slow process of normalization, where the scars of destruction are gradually overlaid by the natural rhythm of the environment.
This scientific visualization does more than just illustrate temperature variations; it transforms the headlight into a canvas of radiant colors, each hue telling a story of intensity and resilience. The areas that still emit warmth contrast sharply with the cooler regions, creating a dynamic and compelling composition that invites viewers to contemplate the lingering effects of the fire.
Complementing this thermal study, the same headlight motif has been edited in black and white and developed on Polaroid film. This monochromatic interpretation strips away the thermal hues, focusing instead on the raw textures and forms that emerge from the charred surface. The grainy quality of the Polaroid medium adds a layer of nostalgia and immediacy, capturing the headlight in a moment suspended in time.
This exploration transcends the mere documentation of a burnt object. It is an invitation to reflect on the hidden narratives embedded in material transformation and to appreciate the multifaceted beauty that emerges from destruction. The headlight, through these dual representations, becomes a symbol of resilience and the enduring interplay between destruction and creation.

Beyond the technical and aesthetic aspects, this situation also opens an emotional gateway. An unknown person has placed fresh roses on the burnt car, similar to how one might lovingly place flowers on a coffin. These roses have been carefully laid on the hood, tucked behind the windshield wipers, and nestled between the deformed parts of the car.
This act of placing flowers introduces a poignant layer of human emotion and empathy into the scene. It stands in stark contrast to the usual indifference of the city, which has been, at least partially, shaken to its core.
This momentary break in the city's usual circle serves as a reminder of the depth of human emotion and empathy that can surface amidst destruction. The scene, with its somber tone, underscores the gravity of the situation and the sincerity of the unknown person's gesture.
At the very least, the arrangement leaves ample room for interpretation —interpretation that prompts many people to pause and reflect. What remains at the end, apart from a heap of ashes and dysfunctional matter?

We immerse ourselves in another reality, striving to lose ourselves within it. The tangible world feels too harsh and unforgiving. Shapes dissolve and reemerge anew, a fluid transformation akin to the forgotten art of vandalism—an elusive dream one tries to reclaim upon waking. What is real, and what seeks to mislead us? Does it even matter?
In this ethereal realm, we are invited to question the essence of existence itself. The boundaries blur, and the distinction between truth and illusion becomes an enigma. As we wander through these ever-changing forms, we confront the profound uncertainty of our perceptions. This experience beckons us to ponder: in a world where reality is pliable, where do we find our footing, and does the pursuit of certainty diminish the beauty of the unknown?
deformation: (ˌdiː.fɔːˈmeɪ.ʃən)
Noun - the action of spoiling the usual and true shape of something, or a change in its usual and true shape.
It is the depiction of a primal force. Heat and cold tear the surface apart, only to let it solidify in a new form. Destruction is transformation. Transformation is development.
Everything is constantly in a flow, new paths continually unfold. No matter where the eye lingers, the small depressions and elevations suggest new routes. For the moment, they seem to lead to nowhere. This emptiness reminds us that we perceive only a tiny fragment of reality. But who truly knows what the concept of reality aims to describe?
The truth is not the reality.
